Village Hall

Colburn Village Hall was built in 1956 by the residents of Colburn all of whom gave 1 shilling out of their wages to purchase the materials. Labour and time was given freely so it was in essence a real community project of the time. The hall consisted of a kitchen, stage, toilets and a car park.

It is run as always by Trustees, of which there are 6 at the moment, all of whom are volunteers and give up their time freely to clean, paint and fundraise to try and keep this much loved building up to date and in line with Community Buildings.

Over the years there have been many varied community groups that have accessed the building from WI, Marching Bands, Bingo, Toddler Groups, Whist, Amateur Dramatics, Gardening Clubs, Bee Keeping, Radio Club, Jumble Sale, Community Café, Blood donors, Dancing Tap, Modern & Ballet, Sequence Dance, Afternoon Tea, Keep fit, Girl Guiding, Over 55’s, Polling station, Church, Town Council, Public meetings, Parties and many Fundraisers. There are in fact too many to mention.

The Hall has undergone many changes over the years, a back room extension was put on in 1976, which allowed another room to be hired out as the growing community required more space for groups to develop and grow.

In the early 90’s the hall had a total refurbishment which included a front extension. The building was widened adding new toilets, office and much needed storage room, as the community need was for a larger building. These works were carried out through fundraising and large grants.

By 2022, the Hall had further refurbishment with a new roof, heating system, double glazed windows, doors and external insulation to reduce running costs and create a warm, social space particularly in winter.  Work completed in August 2023 has enlarged the kitchen space with new cupboards, storage, worktops and tiling.  The Main Room has been repainted with the side sitting areas re-carpeted.  This brings the Hall into the 21st Century and enables it to be safe guarded for future generations to come.

As with every project, it needs people and passion to succeed. So if you would like to help, please do not hesitate to get involved.
